JaMaHa's Guide to IRC: Using IRC

First of all, I'm going to explain different user modes. In IRC channels, people have different levels of "power". Here's a list of them, in order of the amount of power they have:

Name Icon ChatZilla icon
Owner ~ Owner
Admin & Admin
Operator/Op @ Operator
Half-operator/Halfop % Half-operator
Voice + Voice
Regular user   Regular user

Most of people on a channel are just regular users, with no power on the channel. All they can do is chat. A voice is just like regular user, except if the channel is moderated they are able to talk unlike the users without a voice.
Now, an operator. An Operator (Op for short) has pretty much full power in the chatroom. Ops can kick and ban people, set the topic and promote other users to ops/halfops. A halfop can do all of those except promoting other users.
Owner and admins are a bit more uncommon and some networks don't even have those. They're pretty much ops with some extra power.

Now, to commands. Commands are fun.

A command always starts with a slash. That's the /-character. Here's a list of a few commands you might need.

Command Description Results in
/me [action] The action command * JaMaHa performs the action command
/kick [name] [reason] Kicks someone off the channel, only usable by halfops or greater. * JaMaHa has been kicked off #nsm by JaMaHa (Shush!)
/nick [new nick] Changes your nickname * JaMaHa is now known as JaMaHa-
/msg [nick] [message] Sends a private message to someone
/query [nick] Opens a query window with someone. /msg does this as well but this allows you to open the window without sending a message
/quit [message (optional)] Disconnects from the server and closes IRC. An optional quit message can be used. * JaMaHa has quit IRC (BYE!)

That could get you started. Now, of course you want to learn about our bot as well?
